The Military Medal was instituted in 1916
during the First World War, and is awarded to
non-commissioned officers and men of the New Zealand Army
for acts of bravery. Bars may be awarded for subsequent
acts. Despite the fact that this medal was only instituted
halfway through the war, over 115,000 medals had been
awarded by 1919, 2066 being awarded to the New Zealand
Expeditionary Force.
Medals are named in impressed capitals.
