The Royal Red Cross was instituted by
Royal Warrant on 23 April 1883. On 10 November 1915 the
second class or Associate of the Royal Cross was created.
From 1917, subsequent services by holders of the Royal Red
Cross were recognised by the award of a bar. Both classes
are awarded to trained nurses who have shown special
devotion in nursing the sick and wounded of the military
forces, or who performed some exceptional act of bravery at
their post of duty. Crosses awarded during the First World
War were issued unnamed.
