The Victoria Cross, the British
Commonwealths most prestigious award for outstanding acts of
gallantry, was instituted by Queen Victoria in 1856 during
the Crimean War. A total of 11 crosses were awarded to the
N.Z.E.F during the First World War.
Details of the recipient are always
engraved on the back of the suspender bar, with the date of
the action usually being engraved in the reverse centre of
the cross.
